General
- The Savanna Biome is known for its sparse trees and shrubs. There are 3 different types of Savannas: Climatic, Edaphic, and Derived. The Climatic savannas are a result of climate conditions. Edaphic savannas are a result of soil conditions. Derived savannas are a result of forest clearings by humans.
There are two different distinct seasons in the Savanna biome. They are the dry season (Winter) and the wet season (summer). The dry season has temperatures from 68 to 78 degrees Farenheit. There is very little rainfall during this period of time, between December and February. The wet season has temperatures from 78 to 86 degrees Farenheit. Duringthis time period there are heavy amounts of rain, averaging between 15 and 25 inches. It is hot and humid at this time.
The Savanna biome has porous soil that is covered by a thin layer of humus. Humus is an organic compound that is formed by the decomposition of leaves and other materials. This allows rain to drain more quickly during the rainy season. The organic component of soil, formed by the decomposition of leaves and other plant material by soil microorganisms.
Geographic Distribution
Savanna biomes are found on either side of the equator at the edge of tropical rainforests and desert biomes. They are also referred to as tropical grasslands, depending on the person. You can find the Savanna shaded with the tan color in the picture below.
